Techniquest is Cardiff Bay's hands-on science discovery centre, a place where curiosity meets fun for all ages. Housed in a striking modern building on the waterfront, this interactive museum has been sparking imaginations since 1986. With over 120 exhibits, a planetarium, and live science shows, it’s a brilliant spot for families, but also a fascinating detour for any traveller keen on science, technology, or simply a playful break from sightseeing.
Highlights & What to See
- Hands-on exhibits: From pulleys and levers to a giant bubble wall and a gravity-defying ball run, you can touch, pull, and experiment your way through dozens of interactive stations.
- Planetarium shows: The state-of-the-art digital planetarium offers immersive journeys through the cosmos – check the daily schedule for shows tailored to different age groups.
- Live science demonstrations: Don’t miss the explosive stage shows where staff perform experiments with liquid nitrogen, fire, and more – entertaining and educational in equal measure.
- “Wow” Gallery: A dedicated space for temporary exhibitions that dive deeper into specific scientific themes, from robotics to the human body.
- Cardiff Bay location: The centre sits right on the waterfront, so you can combine your visit with a stroll along the bay, a meal at one of the many restaurants, or a trip to the nearby Wales Millennium Centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for around two to three hours to explore the main exhibits, catch a planetarium show, and enjoy a live demonstration. If you have kids who want to try everything, or if you’re a science enthusiast yourself, you could easily stretch it to half a day. The centre is compact but packed with activities, so it’s best to arrive early to avoid the busiest periods, especially on weekends and school holidays.
