Early May Bank Holiday

1st Monday in May

The Early May Bank Holiday falls on the first Monday in May and is observed across all four nations of the United Kingdom. It was established in 1978 under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act, replacing the Whitsun Monday holiday which had a variable date. The holiday is associated with International Workers' Day (May Day), celebrated on 1 May by the international labour movement. The UK government has occasionally moved the Early May Bank Holiday for significant national events — most notably to 8 May 2020, to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe).
